Pubblichiamo nella versione originale inglese il comunicato del movimento MY Voice My Choice che annuncia la trasmissione alla Commissione europea dell’iniziativa dei cittadini europei (ECI) My Voice, My Choice European: for safe and accessible abortion, che ha raccolto oltre 1 milione di firme 

Yesterday [1/9/2025] was a very busy and historic day in Brussels for our movement. After a year and a half of relentless work, the My Voice, My Choice European: for safe and accessible abortion European Citizens’ Initiative was officially submitted to the European Commission with 1,124,513 verified signatures from every EU Member State. This marks the first time reproductive rights will be placed on the Commission’s agenda by its citizens.

Our day began at Place du Luxembourg in front of the European Parliament, where we were joined by allies from across Europe and Members of Parliament who support our initiative. We raised a banner that read: “Together we can change history and protect reproductive rights in Europe.” Pink smoke filled the air as we carried the voices of over one million people into the EU institutions. From there we marched together  with 200 supporters carrying 27 boxes each representing one EU country to the European Commission, each.

The biggest event of the day was the press conference where campaigners from all over Europe spoke about the state of reproductive rights in EU different member states where today abortion is criminalized, almost completely banned or inaccessible because of systemic barriers and stigma. But we also spoke about the hope and solidarity our movement is bringing. Nika Kovač, our campaign coordinator, reminded us: “Today we are the largest feminist movement in Europe, built on kindness, compassion, and solidarity. A million signatures mean a million voices calling for a Europe of equality, freedom, and hope.”

Improving access to safe abortion for millions of women across Europe and preventing needless suffering and fatalities should be a top priority of the EU. It is unacceptable that over 20 million women in Europe still lack access to safe abortion care. And because the EU and its politicians didn’t act, we, the citizens of Europe, had to. We want the EU politicians to see My Voice, My Choice as the moment they finally go from words to action, to see its citizens as partners in making a freer, safer and more just Europe.

Thanks to over a million people who signed and supported this initiative, we are one step closer to our goal – that every woman in the EU has the freedom to choose and access to safe abortion care. This victory is ours as a community, another evidence that there is nothing we can’t do if we stand together.
