The document has been signed by more than 70 well known Italian and European economists and experts, as indicated in the list at the end of the document. It is currently widely circulating in the internet and it has had more than 650 views in just a month at the above link. The list of the names of the European experts sharing the document will be available at the above indicated link and be regularly updated in the coming months.

We would also like to organize a half-day discussion between the signatories of the document in Rome in March/April and eventually also in some other European capitals.

The document indicates that the advances in economic, social, territorial disciplines during the last half century are leading many experts in these disciplines to a basic consensus on the key political values and policy principles of a common European strategy aiming to promote a faster growth of the European economy, lower social disparities and a better quality of life for the citizens.

Therefore, the document indicates the political values and policy principles (cfr. section 6 and Table 1), which are appropriate in a modern knowledge society and may represent a modern political platform for the various political forces aiming to obtain the political majority in the European Parliament after the 2019 elections.

The document illustrates a modern evolutionary (neoSchumpeterian and neoKeynesian), demand driven, innovation, socially, territorially and environmentally oriented policy approach aiming to promote economic growth and quality of life through a modern “industrial and territorial strategy”. This policy strategy clearly would represent a radical change with respect to the orthodox free market or neo-liberal and ordo-liberal economic policies, which are based on 900century ideologies, which have led to an excessive power concentration in the so called establishment and too high social disparities, political conflicts and fragmentation between the individual European countries and within these latter, to slow economic growth of the European economy and a decline of the role of the European Union at the international scale.

The document is addressed primarily to the world of academic and no academic experts, to the socio-economic stakeholders: trade unions, business associations, banks, cultural associations, the media, etc., and in general to the many well informed citizens interested in the economic policy debate. Clearly, political parties are welcome to use in their political programs our proposals, which are based on the recent evolution of socio-economic sciences, rather than adopt the traditional inadequate ideological schemes indicated above, which seem ineffective to face the actual problems in Europe and the needs of the European citizens.

In fact, we believe that the scientific community (for a “no partisan” civil commitment) should participate in the debate on the economic problems in the European Union and propose new modern and effective policy guidelines, due to the uncertainty of the actual economic situation in Europe and at the global scale, the moving away from the political debates by many European citizens and in particular by young people, the diffused sense of insecurity, the lack of confidence in the future and the desire for a better quality of life in our cities.

It would also be important if you could send some brief comments and suggestions (0,5-2 pages) to be eventually shared with your permission with the other signatories of the document, in order to promote among us a discussion on these very actual and important issues.

We look forward to your response and eventual comments as soon as possible. You are also kindly invited to share this document with other well qualified colleagues and ask them to communicate their general agreement with these policy guidelines.
